Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce

Diplomats

Who are the Diplomats?

Diplomats are a committee of Chamber member volunteers who support the mission, goals and efforts of the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce.

Who can be a Diplomat?

Diplomats must own or work for an organization that is an active Chamber member.

When are the monthly Diplomat Meetings?

Monthly meetings are at the Chamber office on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 4:00 PM. New Diplomat orientation is conducted quarterly at 3:30 PM. (see calendar)

How do the Diplomats operate?

The Diplomats work closely with an assigned Chamber staff member. A Diplomat Chair and Vice Chair coordinate Diplomat activities with the Chamber staff. In November of each year the Diplomats identify at least three individuals willing to serve as Chair or Vice Chair for the coming year. The Chamber’s Executive Committee then makes the selection for the coming year, usually from the names provided. The Chamber reserves the right to modify the policies concerning the Diplomats at any time.

What are the requirements of Diplomats?

Diplomats are expected to:

  • 1) Attend each monthly meeting.
  • 2) Attend at least 2 Chamber events each month.
  • 3) Promote networking at events and be visible with a Chamber name badge.

After attending a minimum of 2 events in one month new Diplomats may purchase a name badge for $5.

What opportunities are available to Chamber Diplomats?

  • 1) Chamber ribbon cuttings.
  • 2) Monthly participation with other Diplomats in welcoming new Chamber members.
  • 3) Expanding your network of contacts at Chamber Business Happy Hours and Chamber breakfasts, lunches and other events.
  • 4) Learn and demonstrate how to network with other Chamber members.
  • 5) Participate in monthly Diplomat meetings to learn more about Chamber initiatives and Diplomat events.
  • 6) Have fun while supporting your Chamber and deepening relationships with other members!

What is the Welcoming Committee?

The Welcoming Committee is the Chamber’s way of thanking new and selected renewing Chamber members as designated each month by the Chamber staff. Diplomats deliver “goodie bags” and flowers compliments of Sparks Florist. Diplomats may include their company’s promotional items, brochures, pens, coffee cups, etc. in the “goodie bags.”

What is a Ribbon Cutting ceremony?

Member companies either host a ribbon cutting alone or include it with another event like a “grand opening.” Proclamations are read and afterward Diplomats hold the ribbon for “the cut” and photos. If asked to be in the picture, please stand behind any company representatives. (Always be respectful of the company’s wishes)

A strong showing of Diplomats demonstrates the appreciation and support the business receives from the Reno Sparks Chamber. Ribbon cuttings provide an excellent opportunity to meet key people and owners of businesses.

Note: Plan on arriving 10–15 minutes early to be briefed on any specific procedures related to this event.

Business Networking Breakfasts, Lunches and other scheduled events

The Chamber staff may recruit 2 – 3 Diplomats to work sign–in tables. Those individuals attend the event at no charge. Other Diplomats are encouraged to attend, paying the member price. To maximize your business opportunities sit with people you don't know. Wear your Diplomat name badge so that you will be recognized for your participation. Take the lead at your table in exchanging business cards. Everyone should walk away with 7 or 8 new business contacts.

Note: Please RSVP using the new Chamber web based system. This is critical to planning for the number of attendees.

In Summary

The Diplomat program is a key component in making Chamber membership worthwhile for all types of businesses. As with most endeavors, you only get out of it what you are willing to put in to it. An active Chamber Diplomat from your company is a great way to maximize the value of Chamber membership.
